The number of men who have died from exposure to asbestos

The number of men who have died from exposure to asbestos has trebled from 2,317 in the period 1980-1985 to 6,475 during 1996-2000, the Health & Safety Executive revealed this week. From exposure to asbestos to the onset of the fatal disease mesothelioma can take between 15 to 60 years.

Construction workers are among those at highest risk of contracting the disease.

Women account for 15% of mesothelioma cases.
