The mayor of Hasankeyf, a town due to be submerged if the Ilisu dam is built in Turkey, has cancelled a tour of the UK. He feared that his trip would escalate tensions between the Turkish government and predominantly Kurdish locals who feel there has been inadequate consultation on the hydroelectric dam. Contractor Balfour Beatty, part of a Swiss-led consortium, has secured a ú200M UK export credit guarantee for the project.
