The Jean genie

Congratulations to Jean Venables on her election as President of the Institution of Civil Engineers for 2008 (NCE last week).

I am involved in flood risk management and work with a number of graduates who are applying their geography degrees to practical civil engineering. Jean's work to create a new membership framework will enable us to welcome them formally into the Institution.

It may not just be a coincidence that most of these geographers are women who did not even consider civil engineering as a degree but who now fill vital positions within our rivers group team.

Jean has long been a role model for other women in the profession. Her future title can only increase her profile, hopefully demonstrating to more young people that civil engineering offers a career for many, regardless of gender or background.
