The Gallery | Florence’s river bank collapses

Dramatic images have been released showing the aftermath of a 200m stretch of Florence’s Arno river bank collapsing, affecting the Ponte Vecchio and Ponte alle Grazie.

Around 20 parked cars were submerged in the collapse on Wednesday (25 May), understood to have occurred when a large water pipe under the site failed.

All of the images are from Florence’s fire department, the Comando provinciale Vigili del Fuoco Frienze, part of the Corpo Nazionale Dei Vigili del Fuoco.
