The Gallery and Video | The 50-storey tower with 600mm walls

Structural engineering consultancy Web Structures has released this video explaining how it helped create three towers in Kuala Lumpar for British architects Foster + Partners.

The ‘Troika’ building is made up of three towers linked by a sky bridge on the 24th floor. The tallest of the three towers is more than 200m high and has just 600mm-thick shear walls.

The towers were constructed using two components: 65mm-thick precast concrete panel; and 470mm-thick cast-in-situ reinforced concrete.

The precast panels, measuring 3.6m by 1.2m, were mounted onto steel frame strong-backs, which enabled them to be lifted, aligned and adjusted into their position, in accordance to the stringent tolerances that ensure verticality and straightness.

Web Structures group director Dr Hossein Rezai said: “These were cast off site with the dimension, colour, texture and tonality all carefully controlled. The precast panels were then transported to the site and used as permanent shuttering for the shear walls.”

The second component, the 470mm-thick cast-in-situ reinforced concrete, filled the gap between the sandwich of precast panels. A reinforcement cage was lowered into the space between two back-to-back precast panels then concrete was poured in.

The three towers are 160m with 38 storeys; 177m with 44 storeys; and 204m with 50 storeys.

  • I decry the deterioration of spelling in NCE. There is a big difference between "sheer walls" and "shear walls", the latter being what I am sure is meant here. Unforgivable in a technical publication.
