The facts

Of the UK's 20 largest civil and structural consultants, six are the British arms of global groups and their parent companies are US based. Ten years ago, only two of the top 20 consultants were part of global groups.

Of the consultants with the largest number of staff working on overseas projects, seven are members of a globalgroup.

Ranking construction design firms by revenue earned outside their home market shows that no UK firms appear in the top 20.

The highest placed UK firm is Ove Arup at number 23, followed by Maunsell at 26 and Mott MacDonald at 27.

Of the top 50 firms, 20are from the US, seven from the UK, four from Canada, Japan and the Netherlands, two from France and South Korea and one each from Belgium, Egypt, Finland, Germany and Italy.

In the Middle East, British construction design firms have 10.3% of the work won by overseas companies. Only the Americans do better with 42.8%. In Asia, the UK score is 13.5%, again second only to the US companies which secured 43.4%. In Africa, Europe, the US and Latin America, however, the percentage of work won by UK firms is in the low single figures.
