TEXAS INFRASTRUCTURE clients have just completed a tour of Europe to drum up bidders for a $190bn publicly financed transport building programme.
The US Trans Texas Corridor will see a series of transport links constructed with a total length of 6,700km, including dual three lane highways for passenger vehicles and dual two lane freight highways.
Six rail lines will run alongside the highways, which will include two high speed lines, two commuter lines and two freight lines. A 60m utility zone for power lines and oil and gas pipelines is also included. In total the corridor will be 366m wide.
UK consultant Halcrow organised the tour last month to gauge interest from construction firms and banks in forming public private partnerships. The team from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) visited London, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome.
Halcrow is also providing procurement advice and transport expertise for the project, which is needed to manage a predicted population growth in the state from 21M to 40M over the next three decades.
Priority routes will stretch between Denison and the Rio Grande Valley, Texarkana and Houston to Laredo, Dallas and Fort Worth to Houston, and El Paso to Orange.
The bold spending plan was made possible by legislation in 2001 allowing TxDOT to use public finance.
