Construction of the world’s largest immersed tube tunnel has moved a step closer to reality as project promoter Femern starts the tender assessment process.
Femern has said that it has received 17 tenders from nine major contracting consortia for the construction elements of building the tunnel link Germany and Denmark.
The four contracts cover the dredging of the 18km long and 12m deep trench in the seabed for the tunnel, the construction of the northern and southern ends of the tunnel and the establishment of the adjacent facilities on both the German and Danish sides of the tunnel.
”This is a very important stage for the Fehmarnbelt project, which we’ve been eagerly awaiting. We now finally get to see the specific and innovative solutions that the contractors have prepared,” said Fermern technical director Steen Lykke. “Interest from the contractors has been fantastic and we’re looking forward to examining the tenders in more detail.”
According to Fermern, some of consortia have chosen to tender for the whole project whereas others have decided to focus on certain tasks.
Pricing conversations are expected to be concluded in December and Femern hopes the project will be completed in 2021.
