Temporary Tattoo

Finances are being sought to develop a new retractable grandstand for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Existing stands take six months to erect and remove every year.

Every August, more than 200,000 visitors flock to Edinburgh castle to watch the Tattoo. But while the tourists disappear, the seating lingers on the castle esplanade for a total of six months while it is put up and taken down.

Proposals have been put forward in the past for retractable stands, but Tattoo organisers say that they are unable to confirm any details at this stage.

A contractor is currently being sought for the £15M project and a design team has already been appointed.

The new 8,600-seater grandstand is expected to be ready by 2011.
