Teignmouth tidal defence gains green light

Plans to protect 410 properties in Teignmouth, Devon from the risk of tidal flooding have been approved by the local authority.

Teignbridge District Council’s planning committee unanimously backed Atkins’ design for the £4M scheme to protect the Back Beach area of the town. The Environment Agency project includes new flood defence walls, building on top of existing walls and using existing property frontages to increase protection.

Atkins won the contract for the design work following successful delivery of another tidal defence scheme in Devon at Shaldon and Ringmore.

Construction at Teignmouth is expected to start in January next year.
