Teddie boy

Letters

My grandson has just completed his second year of a four year civil engineering degree. In the last few months he has made many applications to contractors and consulting engineers for a summer job. Indirect approaches have also been made on his behalf. I understand that acknowledgement appears to have disappeared from use these days!

In the 1930s, I had a very similar experience - I ended up as an electrician's mate in a gasworks for one summer and on a sewage works for the second. Both occasions were the result of indirect approaches on my behalf.

At a time when the profession is trying to attract new entries, nothing seems to have changed over 70 years.

For information, my grandson's address is duncan.
