Progress on the £1.5bn A14 road upgrade has been revealed in a series of images from the scheme’s first six months.
Currently the UK’s largest road scheme, the 34km project involves widening 11km of the road in both directions, building a new 19km bypass south of Huntingdon and widening a 4.8km section of the A1.
Work is being delivered for Highways England by a JV between Balfour Beatty, Carillion, Skanska and Costain. Construction started last November and so far, foundations and bridge columns for 34 new bridges along the route have been installed.
Topsoil has been removed for several sections of the route, which can be seen in the aerial images. Meanwhile concrete columns for the bridges are being installed along the route supported by 35m deep piles in clay and silt; they will eventually support 800 concrete bridge deck panels weighing 25t each.
“I am pleased that the outline for most of the new road’s path has now been created and it won’t be long before some of our first structures are completed.” said Highways England A14 project manager Chris Griffin.
“With construction gathering pace, we have now started tackling some of the biggest challenges on the project and it is exciting to see our innovative plans take shape on the ground, including the foundations and some of the columns for the viaduct on both sides of the River Great Ouse.”
The scheme is funded through central government, local authorities and local enterprise partnerships.
Work will finish in March 2021. At present around 85,000 vehicles use the A14 every day, more than its original design capacity.
