A new material by Aggregate Industries could speed up road surfacing by more than 40% according to the company.
The company said the new “SuperFlex” course combines the binder and surface courses speeding up the time it takes to lay the road surface.
The new material can be laid in layers between 100mm and 130mm thick to achieve a minimum surface texture, it said.
The technology was trialled in March this year on the A3 Kingston Bypass in London as part of the London Highways Alliance Contract (LoHAC).
Aggregate Industries area manager for the South East contracting Martin Freeman claimed by using the new Superflex instead of a traditional course pavement treatment, it had delivered 43% time-savings. He said this allowed the contracting team to surface an average of 600t per night – with 700t surfaced on 15 March.
“The impact this could have on reducing roadwork repairs across the UK road network is immense judging by the results of from the A3 trial,” said Freeman. “With the highways industry under increased pressure to deliver more much quicker than ever before, we would urge new and existing customers to consider this new innovation as a way to speed up road surfacing delivery while ensuring excellence.”
