The bridge deck has been closed on the £1.86bn Mersey Gateway Bridge, meaning the last of the four segments has been joined so it is now possible to walk across the length of the bridge.
The bridge has been designed by Cowi, which includes bridge specialist Flint & Neill which has just rebranded as Cowi. The Merseylink Civil Contractors Joint Venture, comprising of FCC Construcción, Kier and Samsung Construction & Trading, is delivering the three-pylon cable-stayed bridge. The deck is built from pre-stressed and reinforced concrete suspended from the pylons via high strength steel cable stays
Cowi bridge managing director David MacKenzie said: “I’m delighted to see the deck of this iconic bridge closed today. I’m looking forward to crossing the bridge for the first time when it opens later this year.”
The pylons are up to 125m high and the bridge itself is 2.250km long with a 1km long cable stayed section.
Two 1700 tonne, 157m long self-propelled launching gantries or movable scaffolding systems were used in the construction of the approach viaducts’ decks. This meant a 70m long span could be completed in a single pour. The deck itself was cast in 6m long segments from six smaller gantries.
