Teams talk their way to the finals

WINNING TEAMS from the divisional rounds of the NCE Communications Competition held in late February and early March are set to go forward to the regional finals in Bristol (30 April), Manchester (23 April) and Glasgow (in early May).

Object of the competition is for young engineers to demonstrate their prowess in presentational skills needed in the promotion of civil engineering projects. Imaginary subjects selected by ICE are deliberately set to be schemes that would be controversial and hence a good test of debating skills. Teams had to choose from:

A traffic solution for the High Peaks National Park;

Development of an old, and quaint, fishing harbour as a china clay export dock;

Building on a Site of Special Scientific Interest;

A water supply dam which will flood high grade farmland and listed buildings.
