STEEL DIAGRIDS and concreteencased steel framed lift cores are to be key features of the reborn World Trade Center in Manhattan, structural engineer Arup has revealed.
Arup is part of the team led by architect Daniel Libeskind that beat off the challenge of the Buro Happold-supported THINK team to win the design competition for the site, announced by Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.
Libeskind's plans include the world's tallest tower and a complex of angular, glass clad high rise buildings around the central 'bathtub' diaphragm wall which holds the Hudson river back from basement areas .
The basic principle of the structural design was 'to make people comfortable with working in these buildings, ' said Arup director David Lewis.
'We will be going for very robust steel frame construction, especially for the cores, with generous escape stairs and sprinklers throughout.'
Massive impact resistant composite megacolumns used on two Arup-designed supertowers in Hong Kong are expected to be adopted where the structure is accessible to the public at ground level, Lewis added.
Also working on the project will be building robustness expert Tod Rittenhouse, principal of New York based Weidlinger Associates. Lewis said he and Rittenhouse had agreed on the basic parameters, including much improved internal communication during emergencies.
