Swiss on a roll

Letters

In 1972 London was lauding the forthcoming construction of Crossrail (a new underground railway line between Royal Oak and Bethnal Green).

In 1992 the Swiss gave authority for the construction of two railway tunnels through the Alps.

On 16 June this year, the rst of those new tunnels, on the Lotschberg line between Frutigen and Raron was opened, cutting the journey time for freight between Germany and Italy by more than one hour.

Crossrail? Still under debate in Parliament and yet to be constructed.
