Swiss keep running

SWITZERLAND KEPT its alpine funicular railways in operation this week despite Saturday's disaster at Kaprun.

Of the eight major alpine underground funicular lines, three in Switzerland were still operating.

'We are waiting to see what the reasons were for the fire at Kaprun, ' said a spokesman for the Swiss Cableways Association.

Funicular lines at Saasfee and Zermat both have 1.5km tunnel sections and are similar in design to Kaprun.

Other underground funicular lines in Austria, at Molltaller and Pitztaller and Serfauf in the Tyrol, closed on Monday.
