Swedes face shame over Ramsgate

A CAMPAIGN has been launch in the European Parliament by East Kent MEP Mark Watts to publicly shame the two Swedish firms, prosecuted after the 1994 Ramsgate walkway collapse.

Watts is furious that more than three years after the accident, which killed six and seriously injured seven passengers, both have failed to pay the fines imposed by an Old Bailey judge.

The firms Fartygsentrepenader AB which built the walkway and Fartygskonstrukioner AB which designed the structure, both part of the Mattsson Group - were fined a total of 1M plus 251,500 costs in March last year for their part in the accident (NCE 6 March 1997).

Both were guilty of gross negligence in the design and construction of the walkway. However under UKs criminal laws they cannot be chased for fines.

Watts hopes that by bringing the failure to a wider European audience it will make sure that everyone in Europe knows what these companies did and put pressure on them to pay up.
