Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering’s piling work on the new Ridge Wind Farm in Yorkshire will help deliver sustainable power but the foundation design is also helping to boost the sustainability of the scheme.
The 350mm2 driven precast concrete piles were designed by BBGE with input from Grontmij to help value engineer the foundation solution, which helped reduce the number of piles needed for each of the 12 turbine bases from 32 to 28. BBGE has said that the piles were manufactured using recycled rainwater and recycled steel reinforcement, as well as 25% PFA as cement replacement.
The piles were installed using two Junttan PM20 rigs fitted with 5t hammers and BBGE has said the rigs were critical to the success of the project as they were capable of tracking up to 800m between turbine bases without impacting on the programme.
BBGE is working for Jones Bros on the project, near Beverley, which will eventually feature 59m tall turbines capable of generating up to 24.6MW.
