Supporting act for Birmingham

SHORING SUPPLIER Groundforce has provided temporary support for construction of a three-storey basement on a development in Birmingham city centre.

Main contractor Carillion is building the 10-storey building for Six Continents Retail, which will use the lower three floors for parking and the three floors above for its headquarters. The upper four floors will be a Holiday Inn hotel.

A 10m deep excavation will form the basement car park. King post piles with concrete infill panels, installed by Hill Piling, will provide support to the lower Fleet Street side of the site while a contiguous pile wall, installed by Expanded Piling, will support the higher Lionel Street boundary. Floor slabs will provide permanent support to the wall.

For the temporary support Groundforce supplied nine of its recently developed 150t struts. Two 80t struts were also used to support the 600mm to 750mm diameter contiguous piles. For one corner the firm supplied its Megabrace and knee braces with welded on shear stops. All the struts were delivered fully assembled and weighed about 3t each.

They will remain in place during the construction of at least one of the suspended floors.
