Sun and sand at Horse Guards Parade

Consultant Atkins and architect Populous have revealed plans to transform the iconic Horse Guards Parade into a temporary Olympic venue for the Beach Volleyball competition.

The outdoor seating bowl with 15,000 seats will have lighting for evening competitions, video and sport-specific fixtures. It has been designed as two distinct elements: a “theatre in the round” lower bowl to provide a high energy atmosphere, and a three-sided upper bowl allowing views of the historic site and London skyline as a backdrop to the event.

London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games submitted plans to Westminster City Council last week, which take into consideration accessibility, noise, lighting, traffic and spectator experience.
