Shona Cooper. Association of London Graduate and Students/GSNC PR officer: 'How many of the ET&M panel could have conversed in a foreign language? They shouldn't be asking us to do something that they can't do themselves.'
Nick Jones, Civil Engineering Careers Service: 'Roger Dobson recently said that most engineers are bad communicators. So how can we be expected to communicate well in a foreign language?'
Janice Mckenna, Maritime Board: 'Many would cram up on a foreign language to pass the exam and then not use it again, which would be of no benefit. I can't understand why this scheme isn't optional.'
David Arrowsmith, Transport Board: 'I'm not going to need to speak another language working for the UK-based Highways Agency. The need to test for a language will make it much more difficult to match candidates with a reviewer who is conversant in the chosen language.'
