The dramatic glazed shell covering the new station which is the Stratford terminus of the Jubilee Line Extension gives a lift to its east London surroundings.
At some £25M it didn't come cheap, but those who commissioned the project regard that as 'chicken feed' in relation to the value of the station as a catalyst for urban renewal.
Fortunately for the thousands who pass every day through the station's interchange with the Great Eastern, Central Line and Docklands Light Railway, a generous amount was allowed in the budget for a subway interconnection. Instead of suffering the traditional minimum-headroom, penny-pinching engineering, passengers at Stratford enjoy the use of a brightly lit, wide and lofty footway passing under the high level lines. Some £5M was very well spent on inserting this new passageway tight beneath several live railway lines.
