Stockport Council undertakes footbridge repairs

Stockport Council is undertaking essential maintenance works to Forge Footbridge in Marple Bridge.

A recent inspection of the structure, which carries the public footway to the east side of Longhurst Lane/Town Street over a tributary of the River Goyt, highlighted defects that require remedial works including:

  • Replacement of the timber deck planks
  • Replacement of the timber handrail and associated brackets

The works, will take three weeks to complete, and will increase the longevity of the footbridge, using approved materials in keeping with the original structure:

The work will be carried out from a temporary working platform erected to the underside of the footbridge. However; due to the nature of the replacement work, it will be necessary to close the footbridge to the public for the duration of the contract.

To assist members of public to cross the watercourse during the work, a temporary scaffold footbridge will be erected adjacent to the existing footbridge.
