Stigma of the dump

Letters

Are we going mad? The UK avoids annual fines of £180M by spending £6bn over 10 years to meet EU landfill targets (NCE last week). At £600M a year that is over three times the fine.

Never mind - the government is dumping both costs and fines on local authorities, with harsh recycling targets and fines of £200 a tonne if they miss their share of EU targets.

Unfortunately, the government forgets that EU targets are for biodegradable municipal (not household) waste, so ignoring a major part of the problem because in EU this includes commercial wastes.

Mankind cannot spend its way out of this crisis. The root cause is that every 'civilised' human being imposes unsustainable demands for both materials and energy.

Meeting such demands supports further unsustainable population increases which add to demand.
