Statue of Liberty to close for year-long renovation

New York’s Statue of Liberty will close for a year from the end of October while renovations are made to the 125 year-old pedestal and the 200 year-old fort base on which it sits.

The work includes installing new interior stairways and lifts as well as upgrading water and mechanical systems.

Since the work is being done inside, views of the statue will remain unobstructed and visitors will still be able to gain access to Liberty Island. Currently, only 30% of visitors go inside the monument.
