Stand to reason

In answer to Stuart Shurlock's 'reasoned' debate on an 80mph motorway speed limit (NCE letters last week), here are some points in favour:

1. Travel times reduced by 14%

2. Driving more quickly than 70mph keeps one more alert as it is less boring

3. The 70mph limit is widely abused because most people consider it is unreasonably low

4. Noise would be unaffected as people already travel at 80-90mph anyway

5. The same applies to emissions

6. Modern cars are safe at much higher speeds

7. German motorways have derestricted sections and work well

8. There should be a general disinclination towards restrictions on personal freedom.
