Intermat Preview

Intermat 2003, from 13-17 May at Paris-Nord Villepinte, is one of the foremost international shows of construction equipment and techniques. From the raft of new developments and launches, NCEI examines some of the highlights.

Atlas Copco

Among the wide range of construction equipment on show at Intermat, Atlas Copco will be displaying the Swellex Manganese range which builds on the 20 year reputation of the system, boasting increased tensile strength and elongation capacity (80%). Greater safety and reliability is also promised.

Atlas Copco acquired Austrian firm MAI Ankertechnik last year and will be showing its range of self-drilling anchor systems for stabilising weak rock and soil in tunnelling, mining and other ground engineering applications.

Another 'first' at Intermat will be the Rocket Boomer tunnelling machine, the XL3C. This intelligent three-boom drilling rig can work on faces up to 106m 2and features the ABC Total system that manages all aspects of the rig's automated operation.

The range includes the WL3 for tunnels up to 17.8m. The version on show in Paris will be equipped with an 'eagle' console for increased upward reach, suitable for tunnelling applications of up to 169m 2and roof heights of 12.8m.

Bauer

In response to demand for economic and environmentally friendly piling techniques, German geotechnical equipment manufacturer Bauer has increased the variety of applications for its BG rotary drilling rig range with a new displacement auger system.

The firm says the high torque and crowd capacity of the BG rigs is ideal for drilling with the specially designed displacement head which laterally pushes drilled material into the surrounding ground.

A BG22H/25H will be on the stand, fitted with the new tool.

The rig is capable of constructing 400mm to 600mm diameter displacement piles up to 25m deep.

Clo Zironi

Brazilian drilling rig manufacturer Clo Zironi's range includes machines for micropiling, bored and CFA piling, anchoring and site investigation.

Its patented Bottom Drive CFA system has the rotary drive fitted at the base of the mast, giving a lower centre of gravity and allowing a small base machine to drill deeper and bigger piles. The auger becomes part of the torque system by the use of notches along its length. These pass through corresponding 'keyways' in the rotary head, driving the auger as it rotates.

The firm says its rigs are therefore lighter and better balanced that conventional CFA equipment. Other features include computer monitoring and recording of piling, friction pulldown to help penetrate harder soils and easy conversion of the rig to handle kelly bars for bored piling.
