Spelman ousted as environment secretary

Environment secretary Caroline Spelman is to be replaced by Owen Paterson as part of the Prime Minister’s reshuffle, according to NCE sister magazine MRW.

Media reports largely attributed Spelman’s departure to a humiliating u-turn over the proposed sale of national forests which happened on her watch.

Paterson, previously the secretary of state for Northern Ireland, is MP for North Shropshire.

He has previous experience of environmental briefs having been shadow minister for agriculture between 2005 and 2006 but his personal profile makes no mention of any interest in the waste and resources agenda.

Recycling members body the Environmental Services Association called on him to put the waste and resource agenda at the heart of the Department’s work.
