Final breakthrough on the £133M Channel Tunnel Rail Link Thames Tunnels project was achieved by the Hochtief/Murphy joint venture last week, nearly two months ahead of schedule. Susie the Dirt Digger, a Herrenknecht slurry/hydroshield tunnel boring machine, completed the second of two, 2.5km long, 7.15m internal diameter tunnels when it emerged into its reception chamber on the north bank of the river. During its drive the TBM achieved average rates of 133m/week, peaking at 170m.
