From 1995-1999 the fixed penalty for speeding was £40 with three penalty points (12=disqualification).

In 1999 the penalty increased to £60.

In court, the maximum penalties are a fine of £1,000 (£2,500 for speeding on a motorway), three to nine points, disqualification, and a requirement to take a fresh driving test.

lThe number of traffic police has fallen by 11% between 1996/97 and 2000/01 nationally. The Metropolitan Police had 922 traffic police in 1996/97, but just 686 in 2000/01, a fall of 25%.
