Speed designing

ANCHOR DESIGNS that would once have taken days can now be done in an hour, according to anchor manufacturer Hilti.

This is the early indication from users of Profis Anchor, Hilti's new three dimensional design tool, launched at NCE's Civils 2004 event in Birmingham in April.

The software, which took two years and over £1M to develop, already boasts users such as Arup and Mott MacDonald.

And the initial feedback is good. 'Where designs may have taken days, they can now be done in Profis in an hour, ' said Hilti product manager Steve Kennon .

'It still has to be used by engineers, as you still need engineering judgement. But we've not yet found a situation we can't handle, ' he added.

Profis is a major step forward from Hilti's HIDU software which limited designs to a square base plate anchored into concrete with a dice-style layout.

With Profis the base plate shape and anchor combination is fully flexible, but will only permit designs that meet standards.

The software can be downloaded free from www. hilti. com.
