Sir Neville Simms is getting used to the Carillion name. His interviewers who tend to call the new company Tar-Car-illion will soon get the hang of it too, he promises.
'I'm very pleased with the name,' he says. It is a corruption of carillon - 'a harmonious collection of bells' and was chosen because it implied openness, collaboration and mutual dependency, key brand values of the new company.
Two thousand ideas were whittled down to a final four with Carillion one of the more extreme. 'Helix was the most traditional of them and there was a more racy idea along the lines of Egg and Orange, but we decided Carillion was us.'
The company name had to change, he says, to avoid confusion and to imply a fresh start. 'The old Tarmac name meant provision of high quality products and services in the built environment but it was very much about building things. Carillion suggests what we do in terms of managing hospitals and roads as well as building them, and how we do it.'
