It was good to read your safety feature (NCE 22 February). I was particularly interested to see the photograph of the mobile vehicle which brings safety to the man on site, rather than having to arrange for operatives to be given safety information off site.

It seemed to me to be a very good instance of civil engineers working with product designers to develop the vehicle being used on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. I hope that many others will follow this excellent method of promoting safety.

As a Fellow of the Institution, I have to declare an interest.

The designer in this case was my son, who is head of design at MDI in London. I have long found it very productive to discuss engineering matters with him and to receive comments from a very different but related profession. Long may this continue.
