Smartfoot quick off the block

AN APARTMENT block in Wiltshire was the latest project to use Van Elle Group's Smartfoot foundation system. The posttensioned precast modular foundation system is suited for low-rise structures such as domestic dwellings and industrial/commercial blocks, combining precast concrete manufacture with simple and fast construction techniques on site.

The apartments are being built on a brownfield site and CFA piles were necessary to cope with the ground conditions. Traditional insitu ground beam construction would have taken nine months but Smartfoot cut this to just five.

In all, 75, 300mm diameter piles were installed to 12m. These were then cut down and precast concrete pile caps grouted to the tops. The site was then ready to take delivery of the 250m of Smartfoot Precast Foundations, which took just two days to lay.

Once in place, they were posttensioned in four hours using 15.2mm diameter unbonded tendons threaded through ducts cast into the concrete and anchored at each end.

Lines and levels were checked with the electronic surveying equipment before and after posttensioning.
