SLEEPING PARTNERS: Two massive factories together capable of producing over 20,000 railway sleepers a day, are now operating in the Australian outback to supply the new 1,420km rail link across Northern Territory. The US-545M line from Darwin to Alice Springs will require 2M sleepers as well as 15M. m 3ofearthworks, 100 bridges and 145,000t of steel rail. Sleepers are now being stockpiled ready for a programmed start to track laying this month. Project completion is scheduled for 2004.
Barclay Mowlem, a subsidiary of British-based John Mowlem and consultant Halliburton KBR, is a member of the Adrail consortium which is responsible for the design and construction of the project.
