IN A bid to slash the volume of construction waste going to landfill a new industry standard colour coding scheme for onsite waste segregation was launched this week.
It is hoped the system will be adopted on sites across the country, said ICE waste board secretary Andrew Crudgington.
fective segregation is important to meeting the UK's new waste acceptance criteria, which come into force on 16 July. These will govern what kinds of waste which can be disposed of in different facilities.
Colour coding has been developed to make it easier for construction workers to identify the skips used for recycling eight different types of waste.
'We've taken our initiative from recycling of domestic waste, where collectors have an agreed colour code for different types of glass, paper, plastic and cans, ' said Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) project manager Paul Martin.
SWAG developed the construction industry waste colour code jointly with ICE, with support from the onstruction Confederation, the Department of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.
'What we've set out to achieve is a waste segregation system in which there is a nationally recognised colour and signage for skips accepting, for example, metal or wood, ' Martin said.
Workers moving from one site to another, or those who do not speak English as a first language should be able to identify clearly into which skips they should put what, he added.
The segregation scheme was launched on Tuesday in Scotland at a Laing O'Rourke site, and at a Bovis Lend Lease site at RAF Brize Norton in England.
But it has already been adopted by more than 70 contractors nationwide, Martin said.
'The launch is about getting this initiative noticed and adopted by the rest of the industry.' Pilot studies have been carried out looking at the costs and benefits of waste segregation.
On a low value construction project last year contractor William Tracey reduced its potential waste disposal bill from £5,586 to £2,951 by segregating its waste stream.
