Sizeable silos

The massive clinker store at Rugby is one of nine silos Bierrum is building there, and the only one to use the lift over lift system. The other eight six 3,000t cement silos and two 2,000t raw meal and reject clinker silos are all being slipformed.

All but the reject clinker silo are sited on the old raw materials quarry, now backfilled, so piled foundations are used. Despite being dwarfed by the clinker store, the cement silos are considerable structures, with heights of up to 48.5m and internal diameters of more than 12m.

Grade C40 concrete is used throughout and all design was done by Bierrum in-house.
