Silent might

The statistics of the ICE/ IMechE merger consultation process indicate two things not covered in the news story (NCE 18/25 August).

First, there appears to be a low interest in the membership to the whole question of such a merger. Only 12.4% of the ICE membership responded. The second, and more important, point was that only 6.5% of ICE membership indicated favour for such a merger.

While our president 'cannot ignore those who took part', he and his fellow conspirators would be unwise to ignore the potentially silent majority without a clearer mandate on such a significant issue.
