Shaping science

Suffolk-based CDC Demolition purchased the new JCB JS220XD after working closely with the manufacturer during its development and after testing it against the current market leading machine. The machines first challenge is on a Grade II listed railway goods shed which will eventually house Bristol 2000s Science World. Part of a 96M Landmark Millennium project at Bristol Harbourside, Bristol 2000 is claimed to be Europes largest current inner city regeneration project.

Science World will be a next generation science centre offering the latest interactive technology combined with participatory hands-on exhibits. Visitors will be able to discover the pleasure and excitement of science and technology as they take part in real experiments and make remote links to laboratories worldwide.

The Harboursides old goods shed is currently undergoing ground works and structural alterations to the floor slabs, roof and facade. As well as the new JS220XD, CDC is also deploying a JCB 804 mini excavator and floor saws.

The current structure is around 12m high and the 804 mini, with breaker, was craned on to the roof to remove a large portion of the existing slab.

This will make room for a new second floor and roof to be built on top of the existing structure. These will be supported on new steel columns which are built off the existing first floor. Columns will be located directly above the existing ground to first floor columns so that the new loads will be carried down via existing load paths.

The 220XD is removing parts of the first floor slabs (around 6m above ground level) to accommodate lift shafts and breaking up parts of the ground floor for a reduced level dig which will accommodate piling for further structures up near the roof.

Contract period is nine weeks, and completion is due by the middle of March.

The machine is fitted with the Nephron Filter which traps all contamination down to 1.5 microns. JCB claims this virtually eradicates contamination- related problems, increasing all hydraulic filter changes to 1,000 hours and more than doubling the life of the hydraulic oil, as well as extending component life.

The 22t JS220XD has a 26t big brother, the JS260XD. Both feature heavy duty mainframes, undercovers, side buffers, turrets and track motor guards, in addition to a FOPS cab guard.

A special merged hydraulic circuit allows for quick and easy switching between hydraulic attachments such as breakers (which require the hydraulic flow of a single pump) and crushers and nibblers which require one and a half pumps flow.

Both machines are powered by Isuzu engines, said to offer durability, low fuel consumption, low noise and low exhaust emissions. Oil and filter changes are only necessary every 500 hours.

JCBs cushion control feature is standard as are pressure boost for extra tearout in hard dig conditions and in-built pump merge facility enabling high flows for large demolition cutters and crushers. An in-line filter is included in the optional hammer pipework return line to protect the machine against external contamination.

A computer aided power control system is fitted, featuring H (heavy), S (standard), L (light) and F (fine) work modes.

Having seen the JS220XD in action, CDC managing director David Clarke says: I made it clear to JCB that to succeed in the demolition industry you require a heavy duty machine which offers consistently high levels of performance in the toughest of environments.

I believe the JS220XD is exactly that.
