Shanghai brings in UK expertise for Yangtse crossing

CONSULTANT Halcrow is part of the winning design team for an 8.8km long bridge in Shanghai across the Yangtse river estuary.

The Chongming North Bridge will be the final link in a chain to connect mainland China to the 1,041km 2Chongming island.

Chongming is the country's third largest island and is set to be the focus of major new development.

Halcrow won the commission in partnership with Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute (SMEDI) and Danish Consultant COWI.

The new bridge is part of Shanghai's largest ever urban project. It involves constructing the bridge, an elevated highway and a tunnel to connect Changxing and Chongming islands to the city. The 12.3bn Yuan (£850M), 25km route will cut travelling time to Chongming from a two hour ferry ride to 30 minutes.

Most of the bridge will be constructed as a viaduct but there will be a 730m main span cable stay section over the main navigational channel.

A second 440m span cable stay over the auxiliary navigational channel has already been dropped in favour of a 220m precast concrete girder design at the client's request.

Halcrow is also part of the design team for the 9km tunnel section, along with Shanghai Tunnel Engineering and Rail Transit Design & Research Institute, Parsons Brinckerhoff (Asia) and the Third Harbour Engineering Investigation & Design Institute.

The 13.8m internal diameter, 15.2m external diameter tunnel, which will be bored through the soft ground by a slurry balanced TBM, will be the largest of its type in the world, said Halcrow.
