Seven on the way up John Owens

Recruitment profile

Transportation specialist John Owens is a principal engineer at Carl Bro's Edinburgh offi ce, and recently spent time heading the company's team designing the 2.1km cut and cover section of the Dublin Port Tunnel - Ireland's largest ever civil engineering project. 'My role there was project manager for delivery of the permanent works design, which also required a great deal of co-ordination between the different joint ventures and the different design teams, ' he says.

As part of his career development Owens initially went through a first line managers' programme that included communication skills and financial management, and more recently had some training for technical director level. This built on the first programme, but added stock market awareness and client issues. He is now involved in a project managers' programme.

'Most of the training you tend to receive further reinforces what you already know, or offers other ways of doing things and increases your understanding, ' he says. 'It's very useful to hear it from a different perspective and also good to interact with people from other offices and disciplines.'
