Seven on the way up Ian Paterson

Recruitment profile

Technical director Ian Paterson has been with Carl Bro since the company first moved into the UK.

He has developed a high level of expertise in water distribution management and leakage control, and spends three days a week working in Ireland, heading a team working for 15 of the country's 33 local authorities on water conservation management.

'We had no water presence in Ireland, and have had to build it up and compete with local consultancies. Now we are the leading consultant in the Irish marketplace in this field outside Dublin, ' he says.

He says the company's experience in the UK has been very beneficial in advising Irish authorities, although the market is very different, and funding is often provided by the EU.

Paterson estimates that there may be another six years work in this area, but believes Carl Bro will be highly successful in the next stage, when Irish water authorities start to develop asset management plans similar to those in the UK. Most of the staff he works with are recruited locally in Ireland, but the projects do offer opportunities for UK-based graduates to spend short periods of time working on Irish projects.
