Self-certification nonsense

Letters to the editor

I agree absolutely with the concerns expressed by Dominic Helps ('Self- certification could prove fatal, warns lawyer', NCE 21 October). I need not remind ICE members of the recent self-certification fiasco in connection with the Heathrow Tunnel contract, and the recent signalling problem at Paddington.

To permit self-certification in the way apparently proposed is a nonsense. I look to the ICE to take an enlightened and determined lead against this misguided concept. It can only have been floated by economists rather than chartered engineers, purely to save money.
