GIANT PROPS are supporting excavations in front of Edinburgh's Royal Scottish Academy, which is undergoing a £26M refurbishment and extension.
Heery International is construction manager for the work which involves excavation of 18,000M 3of material to create an underground link between the RSA and the neighbouring National Gallery of Scotland.
Keller Ground Engineering carried out extensive grouting to fill voids left by the RSA's rotting timber piles in 1999 and 2000 before construction began.
The southern entrance of the RSA is being rebuilt to accommodate a staircase which will take visitors down to the underground link. Bovis Lend Lease is project manager for the scheme, Anthony Hunt Associates is structural engineer and the architect is John Miller & Partners.
