While I have no pretensions about being able to offer an alternative design for Clifton Suspension Bridge, I would like to suggest two practical requirements for inclusion in the specification gained from experience when I was at school nearby a number of years ago.

First, make it less traumatic for a cyclist crossing in a high wind riding single handed while holding onto a rugby ball with the other hand.

Second, if it is to be used by a file of five junior boys wearing gym shoes, marching across as an advance scouting party for a corps field day, remove the necessity for them to be instructed to break step by the bridge keeper.
