ScanRail purchase boosts Atkins' expansion plans

WS ATKINS this week boosted its rail design capability by snapping up ScanRail, the consultancy arm of the Danish National Railway Agency.

The purchase adds over 60 specialist engineers in timetable modelling, real time traffic information, signal control and track design to its already huge workforce.

ScanRail also has over 90 civil engineers among its 330 staff, many of whom have valuable experience from projects such as the Storebµlt and Ïresund Bridges. The purchase is seen as Atkins' latest move to beat the industry skills shortage in the UK. Recent recruitment drives by Atkins have stretched as far afield as Australia.

The consultant, which plans to expand its present 12,000 workforce worldwide to 100,000 in 10 years (NCE 7 December) has promised further expansion in Europe, America and the Far East.
