Engineering Image

'This is one of those scenes that anyone outside engineering will never see, ' says Sunday Times picture editor Ray Wells.

Here, Matthew Clarke captured engineers inspecting the A14 Ipswich bypass over the River Orwell.

'Seeing people doing something extraordinary, which happens to be part of their normal daily job is always worth capturing. We want to encourage more people to take up these opportunities, ' says Wells.

A beautifully cropped image of steel fixers diligently preparing steel reinforcement cages for piles was taken by David Hunter in August.

The work was part of the M60 motorway widening project in Manchester.

The photograph was commended for its strong use of colour and piercing perspective.
