Rugged individuals

Like Michael Swanson's letter commenting on Peter South's apparel (Letters, NCE, 26 April) my attention was also immediately attracted to the cover photograph to which he refers.

Studying it, I imagine some discussion took place on site before the photo was taken.

Peter South looks characteristic of those involved in tunnelling - rugged individualist would not seem an inappropriate description.

I enclose a copy of your front cover from 24 March 1988 that has had pride of place on my office wall for many years. It also shows another individualist - this one ragged.

Note the site boots.
